TWO BOOKS THAT PACK A MIGHTY WALLOP

Here’s a book review double-header featuring two of the rising stars of the action thriller genre. If you like your reading fast and furious then these are for you….

Patriots and Tyrants by Ian Graham

Every now and then you come across a new brand of author whose works you know will feature in all your future must-read lists. They don’t come along that often and when they do they need to be grabbed with both hands. Ian Graham and his Black Shuck thriller Patriots & Tyrants (actually four shorts wrapped into an explosive bundle) fits the bill better than almost anything I’ve read in the out-and-out action collective.

These are clever, purposeful stories that pave the way for a new lead character (Declan McIvor) to be featured in future Graham offerings. Two of the stories here are subtly linked to give a mouth-watering introduction to McIvor as well as providing an insight into the kind of all-action, thought-provoking tales you can expect from the pen of an author who is totally at home in a world where honour reigns even among flying fists and hot lead. Thoroughly entertaining.

Bordertown Blues by Andrew Scorah

I had been patiently waiting for Andrew Scorah to follow up his debut novella ‘Hometown Blues’ with this second outing for Jimmy Dalton and girlfriend Jamie Duggan. Although ‘Bordertown Blues’ whisks us away from the original atmospheric settings of London to the borders of Mexico the journey is every bit a thrill feast as the original.

By his own admission Scorah likes to cut through the frills and get to the point – usually at the end of a gun – and he doesn’t disappoint in a story about the hunt for suicide bombers that rattles along at a frantic pace and almost makes you want to pause for air from time to time. I like Scorah’s honest, insightful style. He is on a winner with the Dalton/Duggan partnership – one that we can expect will deliver more adventures in the not too distant future. Bring them on, I say.
